As part of the Inda Association platform, I developed a dedicated forum to bridge the gap between neurology experts and potential donors. The goal was to create a space where professionals could share knowledge, discuss research, and engage with supporters who want to contribute to the cause. Users can create profiles with photos and personal information, connect with each other through friend requests, and interact via posts, comments, likes, and shares. The platform includes a full-featured private messaging system with real-time capabilities live chat, typing indicators, online status, and the ability to share images and documents directly in conversations. Real-time notifications keep users engaged and informed about new messages, friend requests, and interactions on their posts. The forum also serves as a funnel to the main donation page, with strategic call-to-action posts encouraging visitors to contribute. The backend was built with Express.js and MongoDB for flexibility and scalability, while WebSockets power all real-time features ensuring instant updates without page refreshes. The frontend was styled with Bootstrap for a clean, responsive interface across all devices.

My Tasks

Designed and developed the full forum system as part of the larger Inda Association platform
Built a responsive, clean frontend using Bootstrap for seamless cross-device experience
Implemented user authentication and profile management (profile pictures, bio, personal info)
Developed social features: friend requests, post creation, likes, comments, replies, and sharing
Built a real-time private messaging system using WebSockets (Socket.io)
Implemented live chat features: typing indicators, online/offline status, and media sharing (images & documents)
Created a real-time notification system for messages, interactions, and friend requests
Designed role-based access control (admin vs. regular users)
Structured MongoDB schemas for users, posts, messages, friendships, and notifications
Integrated call-to-action elements linking back to the donation page
Collaborated closely with the client to validate features and ensure the forum met community needs

What I Learned

Technical Growth:This project was my deep dive into real-time development. I learned how WebSockets work under the hood managing persistent connections, handling events efficiently, and broadcasting updates to specific users or rooms. Implementing typing indicators and online status taught me to think carefully about performance and avoiding unnecessary server load.
Building the chat system with file sharing pushed me to handle media uploads securely and optimize delivery. I also gained experience structuring MongoDB schemas for social features designing collections that support relationships (friends, followers) and nested data (comments, replies) without sacrificing query performance.
Using Bootstrap allowed me to rapidly prototype and build a polished, responsive UI without spending excessive time on custom CSS . I learned when to leverage frameworks for speed versus when custom styling is worth the investment.
Soft Skills & Professional Growth: Since this was part of the larger Inda project, I continued balancing multiple responsibilities while staying aligned with client expectations. Building a community feature meant thinking beyond code I had to consider user experience, engagement patterns, and how the forum would actually serve real people connecting over a shared cause.
Real-time features require patience: small bugs like a notification firing twice or typing indicators not clearing can frustrate users quickly, so attention to detail became essential. I also strengthened my ability to break down complex systems into manageable pieces tackling authentication first, then posts, then chat, then layering real-time functionality on top.
This project reinforced that building for community is different than building for transactions every feature had to encourage connection and make users feel heard.
